Dr. Kane served as the Chair of Psychiatry at The Zucker Hillside Hospital for 34 years and the Chair of Psychiatry at The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine for 12 years. He is the Professor of Psychiatry and Molecular Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra / Northwell and the Co-Director of the Institute for Behavioral Science at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.

He earned his medical degree from New York University and completed his internship and residency in Psychiatry at The Zucker Hillside Hospital. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Kane is the recipient of many awards, including the Lieber Prize, The American Psychiatric Association’s Kempf Award and Foundations Prize, the New York State Office of Mental Health Lifetime Achievement Award, The Dean Award from the American College of Psychiatrists. He has served as the President of the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, the Psychiatry Research Society, and the Schizophrenia International Research Society.

He has been a principal investigator on 23 National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants focusing on schizophrenia, psychobiology and treatment, recovery, and improving the quality and cost of care. He is the author of over 925 peer-reviewed papers and has been consistently ranked by Thomson Reuters in the top 1% of researchers in his field, based on citations of his work. Dr. Kane has served on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), chaired the Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals.
